Why do many people try and claim that Muslims worship the Moon?

People try to claim it because they see that the symbol of Islam is the crescent moon and realise that many are ignorant enough to believe them if they say this lie. Many people dislike Islam for being a popular spreading religion and therefore try to lie about it. Ignore it. But also research science and realise certain truths that may not work out completely with the Islamic faith.
