Dvd-rw question/ camcorder?

My wife has an old sony camcorder. We just wanted to watch a recent recording from it so my wife connected it to our tv put the disc in the camcorder and it prompted her to format the disc. So she did. And then it asked her to finalize it. She did that too. It does not look like anyhting is onn the disc now..what would you suggest? We really need what was on it.
